Robert A. Hopkins, 89, of Londonderry, NH, died Thursday February 5, 2009 in the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center, Derry following a lengthy illness. Mr. Hopkins was born in Greenfield, NH on August 24, 1919, a son of the late Leroy and Persis (Aiken) Hopkins. After graduating from Fitchburg High School in MA in 1938, he moved to California and joined the U.S. Navy SeaBees. He received the Purple Heart award for wounds received in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war he lived in California and Washington State where he was employed as a corrections officer. In 1986, he moved to Londonderry and made his home with his sister where he was a member of the Londonderry Christian Church. Mr. Hopkins was a direct descendant of Steven Hopkins of the Mayflower.
He is survived by two sons, Don V. Hopkins and Frederick L. Hopkins both of California, one daughter, April L. St. Onge of Penacook, NH, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his sister, Priscilla J. Schreiber of Windham, NH. He was predeceased by his wife, Marian Orpha (Brosz) Hopkins.
Calling hours were held on Monday February 9th from 2 to 4pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. A funeral service was held at 4:00pm immediately following the calling hours. Following cremation, burial will be in the Greenvale Cemetery, Greenfield, NH.
