Mary A. Hoffman

...Somerville educator; 82

LOWELL - Mary Antonia (Connelly) Hoffman, 82, a well known Somerville educator, diedTuesday evening, May 20, at the Lowell home of her daughter, after a brief battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Edward F. Hoffman, who died in 1985.

She was born in Somerville, Sept. 2, 1920, a daughter of the late Louis B. and Margaret(Flanagan) Connelly. She was raised in Somerville where she lived the greater part of her life. She moved to Lowell in 1988.

She graduated from Bridgewater State Teachers College, and was employed by the Somervillepublic school system at the Cummings Elementary School. She also taught at St. Polycarp’sParochial School in Somerville. She was recently honored by the Somerville Board of Education,by the dedication of the Reading Room at the Cummings School in her name.

She also served on the Board of Directors of the Somerville Visiting Nurses Association, and anaccomplished writer and poet.

She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and her husband John Moran of Fla.,Kristen and her husband Patrick Rufo of Wilmington, Gretchen and her husband Brian DeAngeloof Lowell, Lauren and her husband Charlie Cochran of Wilmington, and Liesl Hoffman of Lowell,a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and his wife Irene Hoffman of Wilmington, one brother, LouisB. Connelly of Melrose, one sister and a brother-in-law, Louise and her husband John Martin ofMelrose, 17 grandchildren, and one great grandson.

She was also mother of the late Mary “Toni” Hoffman, and sister of the late William I. Connellyand Elizabeth Bouvier.

Her Funeral Mass is Saturday, May 24, at 9:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, East Merrimack St. Lowell.Visiting hours Friday 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
