Obituary

Newman Merritt, 85, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009 at his home in Water Valley, MS. He was born October 13, 1923 to Fletcher Merritt and Mamie Eplin Merritt in Wayne County, WV. He was a Postmaster in Lundale, WV and was a painter. Merritt served during WWII in the United States Marines was a member of the VFW in Man, WV. As a Scoutmaster, he attained the highest award and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

The visitation will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 5 to 7 PM at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral services will be Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 2:30 PM in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. William Milam presiding. The committal will be held in Mt. Liberty Cemetery in Calhoun County, MS.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Christine Merritt of Water Valley, MS; four daughters, Judy Bergeron of Washington, DC, Sandra Oldaker of Chipley, FL, Lessie Watts of Oxford, MS, and Jo Ann Potts of Water Valley, MS; two sons, Jessie Adams of Coffeeville, MS and David Wayne Adams of Water Valley, MS; a daughter-in-law, Amy Glasgow; two sisters, Violet Merritt of Newark, OH and Shirley Merritt of Huntington, WV; four brothers, Edward Merritt of Fayetteville, WV, Chester Merritt of Newark, OH, Denver Merritt of Carmi, IL, Ted Merritt of Huntington, WV; seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Merritt.
