MANCHESTER, NH: Joseph F. Landry, 95, a longtime resident of Wells, Maine and formerly of Manchester, NH died January 14, 2009 after a short stay at the Hanover Hill Health Care Center, Manchester, NH.
He was born February 16, 1913 in Manchester, NH the son of Eusebe and Rebecca (Crete) Landry. His career in shoe manufacturing was interrupted for four years while he was a wartime welder at the Portsmouth Navy Yard. The NH Sunday News dated July 24, 1949 recognized him as “The expert Leather Cutter and King of the Shoe Workers” at Evangeline Shoe Company where he was employed for 30 years. The article portrayed him as the family man and hard worker that he continued to be throughout his life. He spent many summers camping with his wife and family. In preparation for retirement, he built the family homestead in Wells Maine which was thoroughly enjoyed by his children and grandchildren for 38 years. He was a craftsman who took great pride in all of his endeavors. Upon his retirement, he served on the Board of the Wells, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport Water District for two terms.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Lillian (Pinard) Landry, He is survived by his son Raymond and his wife Stella of Bedford, daughters, Irene and her husband Michael Solimanto of Chichester, Muriel and her husband Alan Schulte of Laconia, Denise and her husband Ernie Liakas of Belmont, Helene and her husband Robert Langdon of Manchester, 11 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.
Services will be private.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date in St. Mary’s Church, Wells, Maine at a later date.
