Maurice E. Henderson, 89, of Ocilla, died Thursday, January 15, 2008, at the Osceola Nursing Home in Ocilla.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, January 17, at the Ocilla Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Purvis officiating. Interment will follow in Brushy Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9, Friday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Henderson was born February 26, 1919, in Irwin County to the late Grover B. and Texas Rowan Henderson. He lived in the community most of his life, graduating from Ocilla High School in 1939. Mr. Henderson retired after 39 years as a rural letter carrier. He served as a Flight Engineer in the United States Army Air Force during World War II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Mr. Henderson was a member of the Letter Carrier’s Association, the Georgia Sheriffs Association and a member of the Ocilla Baptist Church.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Zelda Burns Henderson of Ocilla; son-in-law, Lamar Royal of Ocilla; grandchildren, Debra Newsome, Wade Royal and Lane Royal; great grandchildren Tyler Newsome and Zachary Newsome; brother and sister-in-law, Kermit & DeLanie Henderson of Albany as well as several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Henderson Royal, 2 brothers and a sister.
