Ann C. Mahoney, 75, of New Bedford died at home Sunday, January 11, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with thyroid cancer.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Fred G. and Laura E. (St. Jean) Mahoney, she lived in New Bedford most of her life. After graduation in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Massachusetts General Hospital, she worked as a pediatric head nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. She was then recommended for the pilot Nurse Practitioner Program in pediatrics held jointly by Massachusetts General Hospital and Northeastern University. After graduating, she returned to New Bedford and became the first Nurse Practitioner in the New Bedford School System and remained with them from 1978 to her retirement in 1997. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and the extended family of her sister-in-law, Grace Penton Mahoney.
She was the beloved sister of the late Irene M. Levesque and Fred G. Mahoney, Jr.
Her family will receive guests on Wednesday morning, January 14th from 9 to 10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 AM at St. Lawrence, Martyr Church, 565 County St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
