Obituary

William L. “Bill” Sweet, a longtime Needham resident died on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the Skilled Nursing Facility at North Hill in Needham. He was 94 years old. A Needham resident for over 60 years, Bill was very active in the community. Mr. Sweet was a World War II US Navy veteran. He served as a Town Meeting member for over 35 years as well as serving on many committees dealing with building and zoning issues. He donated over 4 acres of land along Central Ave now known as the Sweet Wildlife Preserve to the town. Bill was an active member of the Needham Community Council, having served on the board of Directors and Executive Committee and was a founder of the Widowed to Widowed program. He was a loyal member of the Needham Retired Men’s Club, a Past President of the Kiwanis Club and member and former board of the Needham Historical Society. Bill was a Life Member of the Norfolk Lodge AF & AM and was due to receive his 50 year pin this month. He was also a Life Member of the Scottish Rite and the Aleppo Temple Shriners. Bill was a “jack of all trades”, he was always willing to help friends and neighbors. He loved vegetable gardening and landscaping. In 1994, the Needham Exchange Club honored Bill by bestowing on him the Book of Golden Deeds Award, given to a Needham resident who has a history of selfless contribution to the betterment of the town.He was the beloved husband of Mary Caroline (Jenks) Sweet and the late Lillian (Kroetzsch) Sweet and Stepfather of Charles, Arthur and James Dolan. Bill is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday, January 13ht from 5-7PM, concluding with a Masonic Service at 7PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers donations in Bill’s name may be made to the Needham Community Council, 51 Lincoln St, Needham MA 02492.
