Herbert Rego, 69, of New Bedford died January 8, 2009 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Lily (Monks) Rego and John M. Rego, step-son of the late Bertha (Allison) Normile Rego, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Herb was formerly employed by the City of New Bedford Recreation Department from 1957 retiring in 1999. He was very proud to be the first person in recreation in this area to be recognized as a professional by the Massachusetts Recreation and Parks Society which is affiliated with the National Recreation and Parks Society. Herb was transferred to the Recreation Commission as temporary supervisor of summer water activities in 1964 with his permanent appointment coming in 1966 and was appointed assistant director of the Recreation Department in 1970.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Survivors include his brother, Robert Rego and his wife Rena of Quincy; 3 sisters, Norma Bridge of Norton, Lily Hall of Acushnet and Gail Pereira of Stonington, CT; his brother-in-law, Arnold H. Bridge; 17 beloved nieces and nephews, Rick Rego, Steve Rego, Donna Gagnon and her husband Ron, Janice Mooney and her husband Mike, Robert Costa, Lori Novick and her husband David, Arnold Bridge and his wife Tracey, Ronald Bridge and his wife Tanya, Wendy Charves and her husband Kevin, Susan John and her husband Chris, Steven Hall, Sean Rego, Colin Rego and his wife Adelheid, Stephanie Smith, Erin Conlan and her husband Sean, Matthew Pereira and Adam Pereira.
He was the brother of the late John Rego and brother-in-law of the late Dennis Pereira and Ronald Hall.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett Monday, January 12th at 8:45 AM. Funeral Service at 10 AM in St. Martin's Church, 136 Rivet St., New Bedford. Visiting hours Sunday, January 11th from 4-8 PM.
