Leo Milius died on January 8th at the age of 82. He was born in Lawrence and spent nearly his whole life here. Following graduation from Lawrence High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific theater aboard the U.S.S. Gallatin (APA-169). Following the war, he studied at Lowell Textile Institute. He was employed at the Wood Mill and for many years at Nyanza, Inc. in Ashland, MA. He then had a second career as a Senior Operator at the Greater Lawrence Sanitary District. Leo was an accomplished fly tier and fished for trout and salmon extensively throughout Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed bird watching and gardening. He especially enjoyed spending time at his camp at Province Lake in New Hampshire. Leo was involved in scouting for most of his life. He was a member of Troop 2, Lawrence, and also served as advisor to Explorer Post 16. He attended the Troop 2 mountain trip every year since 1938. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Teresa (Liehr) Milius, daughter Dorothy Melvin of Bradford, sons Thomas Milius of Groveland and Richard Milius of Lebanon, NH, grandchildren Colum, Caitlin, Jim, Elena, Joe, Jillian, Maddie, Dave, Grace and Julia, and many nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his daughters Barbara Karpowicz and Patricia Moran. Calling hours are Sunday, January 11 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. 122 Amesbury Street, Lawrence. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 12 at Corpus Christi Church, 35 Essex Street, Lawrence. Interment will be at the Lithuanian National Cemetery, Methuen, at a later date.
