George A. DeValk, Sr. 90

George A. DeValk, Sr., 90, of Norton died on Wednesday January 7, 2009 at the Golden Living Center-Garden Place in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Arline A. (Klob) DeValk who passed away on March 9, 1904. Mr. and Mrs. DeValk were married on September 3, 1947.
Born in Palisade Township, Bergen County, New Jersey on March 1, 1918 he was a son of the late John and Antonetta (Hazelzet) DeValk.
He grew up in New York, Illinois, Maryland and Lawrence, MA and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. During WWII he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged on November 8, 1945 with the rank of Chief Commissary Steward.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, George returned to Lawrence where he worked as a self employed baker. In 1952 he moved to Norton where he had made his home for the past 57 years. He worked for several years at the Taunton Bakery Co. in Taunton and later joined the H.P. Hood Co. in Charlestown and was employed as an Industrial Salesman for over 25 years before retiring.
Since living in Norton he was a lifetime member of the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222 and was a former member of the Norton Finance Committee. He was a longtime member of the New England Bakers Association and had also served as a former secretary/treasurer.
George enjoyed times spent throughout the year at his family’s home in Brewster and loved the different seasons of the year on Cape Cod. An avid chess player he also enjoyed various restoration projects around the house and when his family was younger they shared special times together camping.
He is survived by his devoted children George A. DeValk, Jr. and his wife Ginger of Taunton and Cheryl A. DeValk of Attleboro. He was the brother of Conelius DeValk of Claremont, New Hampshire and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday January 10th at 11:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will military honors will follow in the Timothy Plain Cemetery, Norton.
Visitation will be held on Saturday morning prior to the services beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers George’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Massachusetts Chapter 311 Arsenal Street Watertown, MA 02472.
