WORCESTER___George J. Bakanas, 98, of Worcester died Sunday, January 4, 2009 in his home. His wife of 66 years, Julia F. (Stiness) Bakanas died in 1999.
He leaves a daughter, Karen M. Falco of Worcester; a son, George F. Bakanas of Homestead, Fl., 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 9 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A daughter, Joan V. Nichols of Rochdale died in 1990. He was also predeceased by a brother, Rev. John J. Bakanas and a sister, Julia A. Sinkavich. He was born in Worcester, a son of Joseph and Agnes (Kulak) Bakanas and lived here all his life.
Mr. Bakanas was a machinist 48 years for the former Reed & Prince Manufacturing Co., and retired in 1975. He was a graduate of Commerce High School. George was a member of St. Casimir Church and its former Men’s Club. He enjoyed cheering the Red Sox on to two more World Series Championships.
The funeral will be held on Friday, January 9 from DIRSA-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 298 Grafton Street, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Casimir Church, 41 Providence Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are Thursday, January 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
