Obituary

Stephen V. McCarthy, 83, passed away on December 31st, 2008 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was born in Malden on June 14th, 1925 to his parents Patrick and Ellen (Courtney) McCarthy. Stephen was raised and educated in Malden and attended Malden Catholic High School. During his final year at Malden Catholic, he served as co-captain of the football team. At the age of 17 he interrupted his studies to enlist in the United States Navy. He served his country honorably during World War II until his discharge in 1946. Stephen returned to Malden and earned his diploma from Malden High School. He also received an Honorary Diploma from Malden Catholic High School. For over 30 years he worked as a Skating Rink and Swimming Pool Manager for the Metropolitan District Commission. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene F. (O’Brien) McCarthy; by his children, Maureen Oltman and her husband John of El Paso, Illinois, Stephen McCarthy of Malden, Michael McCarthy and his wife Marijane of Malden, Patricia O’Hara and her husband Brian of West Newbury and Kathleen Parro of Melrose; and by his sister Mary Sheehan of Medford. Stephen is also survived by eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, James, John, Charles and Joseph McCarthy. Relatives & friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Monday January 5th at 8 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 9 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday January 4th from 2-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.
