Mr. Peter N. Demogenes, 90, a former longtime Lowell resident died Monday December 29th after a long illness at the Bedford VA.
Born in Lowell, April 27th, 1918, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Kanella (Leoutsakos) Demogenes. Mr. Demogenes was the beloved husband of the late Penelope Z. Demogenes who passed away in April of 2008.
Mr. Demogenes was educated in Lowell, and graduated from Lowell High School in 1936. He attended Boston University, majoring in Business Administration.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Demogenes enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He earned the rank of Sergeant Major, having been assigned to the 91st Field Hospital serving the Asiatic and Philippine Theater of Operation. He was the recipient of a good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
After his discharge from the Army in 1946, Mr. Demogenes became a co-owner of the Epicure Restaurant, a downtown Lowell landmark, which he managed into the 1960’s. Following this he served as Food Service Coordinator and South Campus Student Union Building Supervisor at UMass, Lowell.
A well known member of the Greek community he had been a member of both the Transfiguration and the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Churches.
In 2003, following 38 years of service on the Board of Directors, Mr. Demogenes was appointed Honorary Director of the Lowell Cooperative Bank. He also served as Honorary Director of the Lowell Association for the Blind. He was a member of the American Legion and the Order of A.H.E.P.A.
He was an avid tennis player and claimed the 1980 championship in the 60 years and over class of the Greek American New England Masters Tennis Tournament.
He is survived by a daughter, Karol Kopley of California and Tyngsboro; a sister, Photine Nikitas of Fitchburg; two sisters in law, Theodora Demogenes of Meredith, N.H. and Alice Demogenes of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews. Peter was the brother of the late George, Paul, and Elias Demogenes, and Stavroula Macerones.
Friends will be received at the M.R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St. Lowell on Sunday from 2 to 6pm. His funeral will take place from the Funeral Home on Monday at 10:30am with services at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell at 11:30a.m. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell.
