Obituary

Anthony "Tony" Giordano, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 24, 2008.

He was born July 14, 1915, in Pawcatuck to Joseph and Josephine Ragussa Giordano. Tony loved to travel and had traveled the world in the Merchant Marines. Upon retirement, he became a self-employed painter and painted many houses in the Mystic/Noank area.

He was an avid swimmer and was recognized in The Day many times for his swimming feats, such as swimming from Noank to Masons Island. He continued to swim well into his eighties. Tony was a permanent fixture at the town dock in Noank, where he met people from all over the world and became close friends with many of them. He could talk to anyone on any subject and read hundreds of books. He enjoyed gardening, watching boxing, baseball and football, as well as savoring a glass of red wine. He had a great sense of humor and his laughter was contagious. Tony was always thankful for his long healthy life and spoke of it often.

He is survived by his sons, Carlos and Antonio Giordano, and his granddaughter, Esthefanie, all of New York. Tony will be sadly missed by his sisters, Angeline Gualtieri of Pawcatuck, Eleanor Castagnaro of Westerly, R.I., Amy York of Florida; and a brother, Ernest Giordano of Florida. He will also be immensely missed by his many friends, who loved him as dearly as he loved them. He was truly a special part of their families.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Moniz and Josephine DesMione.

A memorial service will be held on Tony's birthday at 4 p.m. on Tuesday July 14, 2009, at the town dock in Noank.
