As the first Asian-American woman to graduate from Medical College of Georgia in 1946, Dr. Margaret Wong Mola was encouraged from a young age by her mother, Jan Lim Wong, to succeed in any field she wished. With the support of her family, Dr. Mola succeeded in becoming a physician in a time when female physicians were rare, and minority physicians, even rarer.

After her retirement, she returned to Augusta. Dr. Mola was a lifelong lover of animals, especially dogs. She was a loyal supporter of the ASPCA, an alumna of Mercer University, a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta and a member of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association.

Dr. Mola is survived by her brother Robert Wong of Augusta; sister-in-law Yau Kwan Wong of Augusta; and her nephews and nieces, Carla and Lance McMillian and their children, James and Emily, of Tyrone, GA, Danielle and Sean Moores of Augusta, Mark Wong and Piers Wong of Augusta, Craig Wong of Chattanooga, TN, Wickie Hom of Hightstown, NJ, Delores and Joseph Wong and their children, Christine, Alison and Stephanie of Warren NJ, Teresa and Greg Tom of Athens, Patricia Wong of Athens, and Brenda Elizabeth Wong of Augusta.

Pallbearers will be Mark Wong, Craig Wong, Piers Wong, Lance McMillian, Sean Moores, and Greg Tom.

If so desired memorials may be made to the CSRA Humane Society, 425 Wood Street, Augusta, GA 30904 or to First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way Extension, Augusta, GA 30909.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening January 2, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Platt’s Funeral Home Crawford Avenue Chapel.
