Mrs. Doris O. Ridgeway Carpenter, 91, passed away on December 25, 2008.
Mrs. Carpenter was born June 19, 1917, in Hagerstown, MD, daughter of the late Lelia A. (Sheppardson) and Reuben D. Ridgeway; and sister to the late Madelyn McCormick and Charles Sherwood Ridgeway.
Mrs. Carpenter is predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, George T. Carpenter, Jr., of Parkside, PA and her beloved youngest son, William R. Carpenter, Ph.D., formerly of Seattle, WA. She is survived by her sons, Rev. Dr. G. Kenneth Carpenter and wife Trudy, of Mystic, CT; Maj. David A. Carpenter, USAF (ret) and wife Sandy, of Mystic, CT; Richard T. Carpenter and wife Mary, of Seattle, WA; and daughter-in-law, Deborah Wothers, M.D., of Seattle, WA.
Doris delighted in her 12 grandchildren, Kenneth, Rebecca, Nathan, Amanda, Jennifer, Maile, Ridgeway, Rachel, Reed, James, Ridge and Kai, and her 8 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Carpenter was a children’s librarian for many years at the J. Lewis Crozier Library in Chester, PA. She was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing favorite books with her sons. She took great pride in her children and considered them her greatest achievement.
Doris was a member of the Union Baptist Church of Mystic and a former resident of Mystic River Homes Congregate in Mystic and Fairview Nursing Home in Groton, CT.
A private family memorial service will take place in Rose Valley, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Baptist Church of Mystic, or the Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality (M.A.S.H.), both of 119 High Street, Mystic, CT.
