Marilyn Crowell Cruthers, 81, of StoneRidge, Mystic, and Lands End, Groton Long Point, formerly of Norwich, died on Saturday, December 20, 2008, at Avalon Health Care Center in Mystic after a bout of peritoneal cancer.
She was born on December 31, 1926 in Norwich, the only child of Frank Lane Crowell and Marion Williams Crowell. She was married on September 23, 1950, to Gerald M. Cruthers, a long-time teacher and administrator at the Norwich Free Academy. He predeceased her on July 2, 2005.
Marilyn attended the Norwich public schools, Norwich Free Academy, Walnut Hill School, Pine Manor Junior College, and the Katherine Gibbs School. She was a member of the Faith Trumbull Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; the Society of Mayflower Descendents; the John Howland Society; the Huguenot Society; and the Society of the Descendents of the Colonial Clergy, among many other organizations. She was also a member of Park Congregational Church, Norwich.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David C. Cruthers and Josephine A. Cruthers, and her grandchildren, William M. Cruthers and Elizabeth C. Cruthers. Marilyn loved her family. She was also blessed to have countless friends for whom she cared deeply.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2008, at 11 am at Park Congregational Church, 283 Broadway, Norwich. A reception will follow at StoneRidge, 186 Jerry Browne Road, Mystic.
