TAUNTON - Michael L. Grasso, the husband of Laura M. (Silva) Grasso, died on Friday, Dec. 19th at his Taunton home. He was 91.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Luigi and Angelina (Teccia) Grasso.
Educated in Taunton schools, he was a Taunton High School graduate.
An Army veteran of WW II, he served with the 305th Infantry Regimen, 77th Division, seeing action in Eastern Mandate, the Philippines and the Ryukyu Islands, where his unit destroyed over 350 Japanese suicide boats, prior to the invasion of Okinawa.
Attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Battle Star and Bronze Arrowhead, the Asiatic Campaign Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Victory Medal, the Army Occupation of Japan Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
A machine operator for many years with the New England Brass Co., he was later employed as a custodian for the Taunton School Department, retiring many years ago.
He was a communicant St. Jude the Apostle Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael J. Grasso and his wife Joyce of Westerly, RI; a daughter, Lorraine Grasso of Taunton; 2 grandchildren, Thomas Grasso of Houston, TX and Christopher Grasso of New London, CT; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late John Grasso and Rosalie Alegi.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway on Tuesday, Dec. 23rd at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Jude the Apostle Church (formerly St. Jacques Church) at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 22nd, from 4 to 6 p.m.
