Joe Bryant Lane, 82, of Irwin County, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Saturday, December 20, at Eureka Primitive Baptist Church with Dr. Ernie Jones and Rev. Jeff Cummings officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Friday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Lane was born January 25, 1926 in Sumter, County to the late J.D. and Maxie Clements Lane. He lived in the community since 1999 having moved from Valdosta, where he lived since 1953. Mr. Lane was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, a former radio announcer in Cordele and Valdosta and worked for the United States Soil Conservation. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Marines Corp. Mr. Lane was a charter member of the National World War II Memorial and a member of the American Legion. He was co- founder and charter member, a deacon and Sunday school teacher of Westside Baptist Church in Valdosta.
Mr. Lane is survived by his wife, Karleen M. Lane of Irwin County; daughters and son-in-law Warena Youmans of Irwin County and JoKaron & Gary Cox of Valdosta; grandchildren, Kim Youmans, Beth & Sheriff Gary Vowell, Jay Bryant & Melissa Youmans, Erik M. & Stacy Cox & Heather N. & Chris Butler; 13 great grandchildren and a sister; Beverly Jean Hargrove of Cobb.
