Florence A. (Almeida) Gomes, 84, of New Bedford died December 16, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late August R. Gomes.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Peter and Augusta (Britto) Duarte, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
Mrs. Gomes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
She was formerly employed by Cornell-Dubilier for many years until her retirement.
Mrs. Gomes enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandson.
Survivors include 3 sons, Paul Almeida and his wife Theresa and David Gomes, all of New Bedford and Henry Gomes and his companion Diane of Fairhaven; a daughter, Kathleen Gomes-Counts and her husband Rene "Paul" Counts of New Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Evadney Almeida of New Bedford; a sister, Josephine Gomes and her husband Joe of New Bedford; 2 sisters-in-law, Betty Duarte of New Bedford and Flora Lopes of East Providence; several cousins including her close cousin Rosie Almeida of New Bedford; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Peter Almeida and the sister of the late Amaro Duarte, Joseph Duarte, Antone Duarte, Gervosio Brito Vieira, Isabella Santos, Virginia Duarte and Mary Almeida.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Saturday, December 20th at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday, December 19th from 4-8 PM.
