Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 9am. Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church at 10am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Obituary Information
Mrs. Buckley died Saturday evening at her daughter Nancy’s home in Brockton surrounded by all her children after a brief illness. She was born and raised in Brockton, daughter of the late Michael J. and Anne (Fitzmaurice) Hernan. She was a graduate of St. Patrick High School, class of 1942 and the Williams School of Business. She was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). In 1968 she was elected secretary of the state Democratic Committee; served as a delegate to the Democratic National Committee in 1971 and ran for City Council in 1972. She was the first woman to serve on the Brockton City Council, and the first woman from Plymouth County to be elected to the state Senate. She served in the state Senate for 16 years retiring in 1989. She also served as vice chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
She was a resident of Brockton, spending her summers in Dennisport, MA and also had a home in Redington Shores, FL. While living in Florida she was a volunteer at Bay Pines Hospital for veterans, and was President of the Womens’s Army Corps (WAC) Chapter in Florida.
She is survived byThree sons Kevin M. Buckley of Redington Shores FL, Paul F. Buckley and his wife Lorraine of Budd Lake NJ, and Daniel J. Buckley of Brockton, and two daughters Nancy J. Buckley and her husband Gregory F. of Brockton and Patrice A. Buckley of Brockton. Six grandchildren Anna P, Nora J, Keri A, Gregory M, Daniel J. III and Colleen E. Buckley, one brother William Hernan of New York and several nieces and nephews
She was the sister of the late James Hernan and grandmother of the late Kathleen M. “Kait” Buckley.
