Obituary

Lewis Morgan Bloomingdale, MD, of Westwood, MA, a psychiatrist who worked in Scarsdale, NY, died on December 8, 2008 at Caritas Norwood Hospital. He was 89. The cause of death was intestinal obstruction.

Dr. Bloomingdale was born in New York City and he was raised on his family's farm in New Rochelle, NY. His grandfather had founded the Bloomingdale's Department store with other family members. Dr. Bloomingdale received a BS and BE from Yale University in 1940 and 1941, respectively. He was elected there to Phi Beta Kappa. After serving in the Army as a chemical engineer, in the Pacific, during World War II, Dr. Bloomingdale enrolled in Harvard Medical School. He graduated there in 1950, having been elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. After a residency in psychiatry, he started a private practice in Scarsdale, NY in 1955. He worked there in collaboration with his wife, Eileen C Bloomingdale, PhD, a clinical psychologist. He served as President of the Westchester Psychiatric Society and he taught on the faculty of New York Medical College for many years. He published many professional articles and he edited scholarly books. He belonged to numerous medical societies. His major research interest was Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He traveled to four other continents in order to conduct his studies on ADHD.

Dr. Bloomingdale and his wife retired in 1998. She died in 2000. He spent the final six years of his life in the Boston area, where his son, Kerry Bloomingdale, MD, works as a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School. One of Dr. Bloomingdale's non-medical interests was architecture. He designed his own home in Scarsdale in 1959. The house was featured in several architectural magazines. It was known for its open spaces, semi-circular orientation around a swimming pool, and a dining-room table, as well as a bed, that could be electrically raised to the ceiling.

Husband of the late Eileen C. Bloomingdale PhD he is survived by his son Dr. Kerry L. Bloomingdale MD and his wife Linda of Waban, his grandchildren Kara and Arienne Bloomingdale and Dean Carson and great grandfather of Emily Carson and his sister Laura Goeldlin of Switzerland.
