Screven- Mr. Samuel R. Mitchell, age 66, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Memorial Health in Savannah after a brief illness. He was a native of DeKalb County living the past five years in Screven. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer serving twenty-four years in the United States Coast Guard and was a Vietnam veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Mitchell of Clarkston and a brother C.P. Mitchell of Nevada.
Surviving is his wife of forty years Mrs. Susan Mitchell of Screven; three daughters: Keryl and husband Glenn Hunter of Crescent, Karyn Mitchell of Screven and Kelly and husband Michael Hargrove of Jesup; one son: Charlie and wife Rebecca Mitchell of Jesup; eight grandchildren: Lindsey and Logan Glenn, Abby and Maddy Jones, Samuel and Autumn Hargrove, and Chase and Christopher Mitchell; one brother: E. A. and wife Mary Mitchell of Clarkston; one sister-in-law: Marilyn Florie of Savannah and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the James R. Gordon Memorial Chapel with Dr. Michael VonMoss officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with full military honors.
Active pallbearers will be Hunter Glenn, Michael Hargrove, Will Tyre, Alvin Foster, John Jones, and Casey Caines.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
