Marion T. (Monteiro) Barrows, 73, of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at home. She was the devoted wife of the late Kenneth A. Barrows.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel and Constance (Baptista) Monteiro, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
Mrs. Barrows was employed for many years at Fernandes Supermarket and at MaxiDrug Store until her retirement. In her retirement, she was active in the Foster Grandparents Program in the New Bedford School system, where she enjoyed working in the classroom supporting young children at the J.A. Parker Elementary School.
Survivors include a son, Douglas K. Barrows and his fiancée Nancy LePage of New Bedford; 3 daughters, Debra Simmons and her husband Robert of East Kingston, NH, Pamela Foulger and her husband Martin of Hampstead, NH, and Terri Martin of New Bedford; a brother, Joseph B. Monteiro and his wife Margie of Wareham; 3 sisters, Evelyn Almeida of Dartmouth, Mary Ames and Betty Fermino, both of New Bedford; a sister-in-law who was like a sister to her, Nora Roderick of New Bedford; 5 granddaughters, Lindsay, Kate, Kelsey, Sarah and Taylor, who adoringly called her "Nana"; and many nieces and nephews who will always remember her smiling face and loving ways.
She was predeceased by siblings Arthur B. Monteiro, George B. Monteiro, Adolph B. Monteiro, Edward B. Monteiro, Robert B. Monteiro, Alice Leighton and Pauline Cardoza.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Monday, December 15th at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday, December 14th from 4-8 PM.
