Edward H. Calhoun, Sr., 91, a lifelong resident of Mansfield died peacefully on Thursday December 4, 2008 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Marguerite L. (Monroe) Calhoun who passed away on November 12, 2007. Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun were wed on November 17, 1945.
Born at the family homestead on Mill St. in East Mansfield on December 1, 1917 he was a son of the late Thomas and Alice (Faria) Calhoun.
He was educated in Mansfield public schools and was a 1935 graduate of Mansfield High School. During WWII Ed proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was the recipient of the Silver Star commemorating his participation in 5 major battles including the Battle of the Bulge and day 6 of D-Day. He served under the command of General George Patton.
Before retiring Mr. Calhoun had worked at the former Cleveland Twist Drill Co. in Mansfield for 17 years where he was employed as a Tap Inspector.
Ed enjoyed trips to Cape Cod and walking on the beaches in Dennis. He traveled to Europe where he was able to retrace his war steps. He enjoyed tending to his annual vegetable gardens and had the good fortune to enjoy 27 years of a healthy retirement.
He is survived by his devoted children Dorothy A. Souza and her husband Tony of Mansfield, Edward H. Calhoun, Jr. of Mashpee and Brian M. Calhoun of Hull. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren Patricia S. Ransom and her husband Dale of Norton, Paula J. Souza of Bridgewater, Edward H. Calhoun, III and Erin M. Calhoun both of Mashpee, his loving great granddaughters Lauren Ransom and Erica Ransom both of Norton and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Florence Cooney, Alice Hoag, Robert Calhoun and Francis Calhoun.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Sunday December 7th at 6:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday December 7th prior to the funeral services beginning at 3:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
