Irving S. Torrey, Sr., 94, of Mansfield passed away on Wednesday December 3, 2008 surrounded by the presence of his loving family at the Life Care Center in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Arakelian) Torrey to whom he shared the past 44 years of his life with.
Born in Rockland, MA on July 4, 1914 he was the son of the late Henry and Bertha (Nichols) Torrey.
He grew up in Rockland and was educated in Rockland public schools. During WWII he faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on August 23, 1943 with the rank of Private First Class.
Mr. Torrey was a retired Supervisor having worked for 13 years at the Wrentham State School prior to retiring in 1980. He had formerly been employed for 10 years at the Merckens Chocolate Company in Mansfield.
A resident of Mansfield for the past 46 years Irving’s hobbies included playing cribbage, chess and throwing horse shoes. His favorite times spent were those with his wife and adoring family members.
He is survived by his children Rosemary Burrows of North Attleboro, Joseph Florencio of South Carolina, Betty Burnette of South Carolina, Irving Torrey, Jr. of Rehoboth, Richard Torrey of Foxboro, Sarah Bacon of Dighton and Henry Torrey of Florida. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday December 9th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday Morning prior to the services beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
Due to the limitation of flowers allowed at the National Cemetery and at the request of Irving’s family, donations in his memory may be made to either the Mansfield Animal Shelter 175 Fruit St. Mansfield, MA 02048 or to Vista Care Hospice 690 Canton St. Suite 220 Westwood, MA 02090.
