George B. Hughes, 83, a long-time resident of Winchester, passed away suddenly on Nov. 28, 2008 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Born in Somerville, he was the son of the late George and Ada (Taylor) Hughes. He graduated from Somerville High School with the class of 1943, and subsequently enlisted with the U.S. Navy, where he served during WWII. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1946, Mr. Hughes continued his education at UMASS Amherst and Fisher College. He was employed by the Bank of New England (formerly Merchants National Bank) for over 37 years, and retired from Fleet Bank in 1987 as Vice President of Loans. George was the dear friend of Charles A. Wolski of Winchester, and the beloved brother of Torry Gullion of Nashua, NH. He was also the devoted uncle of Carol Tarbell and her husband Scott of CO, and Laurie Gullion Lindwall and her husband Bruce of NH, and the great uncle of Kate and Ryan Tarbell. A Funeral Service was held in the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Tues., Dec. 2 at 12:00 noon. Interment took place in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
