Obituary

Raymond A. Chartier, 80, of New Bedford died Thursday November 27, 2008 after a long illness.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Philias and Evelyne (Bilodeau) Chartier.

Mr. Chartier was employed as a research chemist at U.S. Rubber in Naugatuck, CT for many years and had several patents registered. He later worked for Thompson Chemical Plant in Assonet which became Olin Corporation. He retired from the Olin Corporate Offices in Stamford, CT in 1978. After returning to New Bedford, he owned Plywood Ranch for five years.

He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and the New Bedford Textile Institute, now UMass Dartmouth. For over forty years he was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 605 in Fairhaven and the Acushnet River Safe Boating Club where he devoted much of his leisure time. He was also a member of the Dartmouth Salt Water Anglers. He was an avid reader and enjoyed his boating and fishing.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his beloved sister, Elaine Fortin and her husband Herve, and their two children, Jane Vieira and her husband Val, and Gary Fortin. His other nieces and nephews are Diane Chartier-Freitas, Philip, Karyl, Nancy, Lawrence, and Craig Chartier, all children of his late brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Philip and Winifred Chartier.
