WAREHAM — Virginia B. "Ginny" (Hirst) Wood, age 92 years, of Rochester, died unexpectedly November 18, 2008, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. She was the wife of the late Richard A. Wood.
Born in New Bedford, Ginny was the daughter of the late Jesse and Estelle (Bailey) Hirst and a graduate of Pembroke College, now part of Brown University. For 35 years she was employed by the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company until she retired.
She and her late husband purchased "Apple Knoll Farm" in Rochester in 1953 and lovingly restored, being the third owners of the old home built in 1810. Sailing enthusiast, Ginny and Dick sailed local waters many times to their favorite spot, Cuttyhunk, in their yacht "Heaven Can Wait," and was a member of the Sandwich Yacht Club.
An avid golfer, she was a member of the New Bedford Country Club, the Kittansett Golf Club and the Acoaxet Golf Club. She also was active with the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, WHALE, the N.B. Glass Museum, and the Telephone Pioneers. Ginny was a great reader and loved to work on crossword puzzles.
Her funeral will take place on Saturday morning, November 22, 2008, at 10 A.M., in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford. Friends will be received within the hour prior to her service. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
