Mary M. (Sommers) Stout, 84, died peacefully at Groton Regency on Wednesday evening, November 19th after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was the daughter of Frank and Mary Mae (Stack) Sommers. Mary was born on January 31, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ. She grew up in New Jersey. Mary came to Groton in 1951. She spent the remainder of her life in the Groton area and came to think of herself as a New Englander.
She was a Navy wife having married Richard W. Stout Sr. in 1943. He predeceased her passing in January 1997. Mary is survived by her daughter, Maryann Thompson and her husband David of Voluntown; a son, Richard W. Stout Jr. and his wife Cheryl of East Haddam; four grandsons, Timothy D. Thompson and his wife Sarah of Bellevue, WA, Richard W. Stout III and his wife Christine of Old Lyme, Michael P. Stout and his wife Meena of Lisbon, and Thomas A. Stout and his wife Rebecca of Glastonbury. Mary was also blessed with 6 great-grandchildren.
Until shortly before her death, Mary resided at Grasso Gardens in Groton. She was an avid car player and sports fan. Her biggest enjoyment was the many trips made along with friends to Foxwoods for an afternoon of blackjack and dining. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family.
The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic is in charge of private arrangements. There are no visiting hours. Burial will be private.
