Salvi Columbus, 82, of Royal Range Rd., Sandown died Friday April 25, 2003 in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Manchester following a lengthy illness. Mr. Columbus was born in Boston, Ma, on August 3, 1920 the son of Salvi and Elsie (Powell) Columbus Sr. He had resided in Sandown for the past 27 years, formerly living in E. Derry and N. Reading, Ma. He served with the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Enterprise CV6. He was a member of the VFW Post 11254 in Hampstead. He worked as a self employed machinist for many years. For the past five years he was employed as a security guard for the Lawrence General Hospital. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and took a special interest in wildlife and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Esther F. (Chambers) Columbus, Sandown, two sons, Frank S. Columbus, Sandown, Leonard M. Columbus, Windsor, Vt, one daughter, Geraldine and her husband David Jeanes, Fairfax, Va, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters, Elsie “Dolly” Hartigan, Deerfield, Ann Auld, Gloucester, Ma, one brother, Alexander “Al” Columbus, Raymond, also several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours. Following cremation, memorial services will be held on Monday April 28th at 1:00pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry.
