Obituary

Martinez, GA---Mrs. Bessie Broxton Scharnitzky, 94, entered into rest on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at her residence.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 11:00 am, at Martinez United Methodist Church, 3614 Washington Road with Reverend Perry Shelfer and Reverend John Kenney officiating. Interment will be private.

Mrs. Scharnitzky was born September 27, 1914 in Burke County, Georgia. She graduated from the Barrett School of Nursing in 1938, was employed at the old University Hospital
and retired from Gracewood State School and Hospital. She was a member of Retired Nurses of Georgia and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the Hopeful Baptist Church, in Burke County, Georgia, but attended the Martinez United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the McDonald Sunday School Class and the XYZ Group.

Mrs Scharnitzky was preceded in death by her husband, William Arnold Scharnitzky, Sr., her parents, Charlie Robert and Bertha Segar Broxton, four brothers, Harry Broxton, Thomas Broxton, Robert Broxton and Fierson Broxton and a sister, Mary B. Laricey.

Survivors include; son, William Arnold Scharnitzky and wife Martha, of Goose Creek, SC, daughters, Mae S. Gilmer and husband, Henry, of Augusta, Johannah S. Singletary and husband, Mike, of Hephzibah, brother, Bruce Broxton and wife, Georgia, of Burke County, GA, sisters, Sara Dozier, of Keysville, GA, Bobbie Chance, of Perkins, GA, Joyce Wengler, of Georgetown, IL and Martha Ann Griffin, of Williamson, GA, grandchildren, Vince Gilmer (Kristan), Elizabeth Gilmer, all of Martinez, Rebecca Franklin (Chad), of Augusta, Andy Scharnitzky (Jenny), of Daniels Island, SC, Jason Scharnitzky (Jennifer), of San Diego, CA, great grandchildren, Kayla, Kaitlyn and Jackson, Gilmer, all of Martinez, Olivia, Broxton and Spencer Franklin, all of Augusta, Alex, Sam and Abby Scharnitzky, all of San Diego, CA, Emily, Drew and Matt Scharnitzky, all of Daniels Island, SC and special friends, Terry and Renee Kirk.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the McDonald Sunday School Class and the XYZ Group at Martinez United Methodist Church and members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 16, 2008 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Road.
