Obituary

Edward M. Mahon, 90, passed away at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on November 12th, 2008. He was born at home in Melrose on April 3rd, 1918 to his parents Michael and Nora (Kelly) Mahon. Edward has been a life long resident of Melrose, attending Melrose Public Schools. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Nashville and the USS San Diego. Edward took part in the commissioning of both ships, therefore he was known to those in the navy as a “Plank Owner”. Over the years, Edward and his family have visited many locations across the country to attend reunions with his fellow shipmates aboard the Nashville and the San Diego. He worked as a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, serving the communities of both Melrose and Malden during his tenure. After his retirement from the Post Office, Edward began a career as a Painter. He became well known as a “Jack of All Trades” to his customers and especially to his family. Edward took great pride in his home. Together with his son Michael, he would plan and produce projects that kept the house in top order. They also ventured into the business of Bicycle Repair, servicing area residents for many years. Edward was very proud to be a founding member of Club 24 in Malden. He is survived by his children, Edward M. Mahon Jr. and his wife Hilary of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Michael Mahon of Melrose and Patricia Halkola and her husband Stephen of Melrose; his grandchildren, Katie Wagner and her husband Matt of Denver, Colorado, Krissy Lipson and her husband Dustin of Stavenger, Norway, and Tommy Mahon of New Orleans, Louisiana; and by his great grandsons Ben Wagner and Drew Lipson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Edward was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Alice F. (Daly) Mahon, who passed away in March of this year, and by his brothers Andrew Mahon, John Mahon, T. Christopher Mahan and William Mahon. Relatives & friends are invited to attend his funeral procession from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Monday November 17th at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Melrose at 10 AM. Services will conclude with interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Stoneham. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday November 16th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Northeast Metro Tech Automotive Technology Dept.
