William J. "Willie" Hawkins, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Friday, November 7, 2008, at Wingate at Reading Nursing Home in Reading after a lengthy illness. He was 91 years old.
Willie was born in Boston on July 10, 1917. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1935. He enlisted into the United States Army on November 11, 1942 and served his Country during World War II. He was discharged on September 25, 1945 with the rank of Private First Class. Willie was employed with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a maintenance supervisor in their engineering department. He retired in 1978.
Willie is the beloved son of the late Samuel and Mary (Carr) Hawkins. He is the beloved brother of the late Anne Mason, Mary D'Agostino, Rita Keaveney, Samuel, Leo, Francis and John Hawkins. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation for Willie on Monday morning, November 10, 2008, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren Street, Charlestown, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Veteran's Administration National Cemetery in Bourne at 2:45 p.m.
