Myron J. “Mike” Bird 80 of Franklin, died Thursday November 6, 2008 at Sunbridge Care Center in Milford, following a long illness. He was the husband of Frances A. (Schussler) Bird.
Born in Brooklyn, New York November 10, 1927 a son of the late Joseph and Eva (Smith) Bird, he formerly lived in Ridgewood, New York until moving to Franklin in 1990. He was a retired truck driver for the New York City Department of Sanitation.
During World War 11 he served in the US Navy. He attained the rank of Seaman 2nd class. He served aboard the USS Briareus, USS Sterope. He was awarded the American Theater Medal, the World War 11 Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in July, 1946.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union in New York, The Franklin Lodge of Elks, and Post 3402 VFW in Franklin.
Surviving in addition to his wife ids a stepson Kenneth C. Griffin of Franklin, two brothers Robert and Donald “Chickie” Bird and a sister Joan Burke all in New York, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Richard Bird.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service Monday November 10, 2008 at 11AM in the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. (www.franklinfuneral.com). Interment with military honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:15PM.
A visitation period will be held Monday from 10-11AM.
