Obituary

SALEM - Bernice K. (Groszyk) Markey, 93, of Salem, formerly of Peabody, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, Salem following a short illness. She was the wife of the late John F. Markey.

Born in Peabody and raised in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Stanley F. & Catherine (Kulczyk) Groszyk. and was a graduate of Salem High School.

Mrs Markey had a love for the outdoors and could be often seen driving her convertible around the area. She and her late husband John were members of the Palmer Cove Yacht Club, the Salem Willows Yacht Club, both of Salem, and the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead and enjoyed yachting up and down the East Coast. Mrs Markey was a long time member of the women’s guild of the St. Thomas The Apostle Church, and was a guide at the House of Seven Gables. She was a resident of Peabody for over 60 years before moving back to Salem. During tax seasons, she was employed by the Internal Revenue Service.

Mrs. Markey is survived by nephews, Walter S. Groszyk Jr. of Washington, DC, Robert J. Groszyk and his wife Melinda of Salem and a niece Paula Field and her husband Paul, of Salem. She was the great aunt of Barry Field of Boca Raton, FL, Daniel Field of Westwood, Katie Field of New York City, NY, Erik Groszyk of Salem and Cambridge, and Keilani Groszyk of Salem and Providence, RI. She also leaves a dear friend, Eleanor Connolly of Marblehead. She was the sister of the late Walter S. Groszyk and sister-in-law of the late Florence (Collins) Groszyk.

A visitation will be held Saturday morning, November 8, 2008 from 8:45 to 9:45 am at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am at the St. Thomas The Apostle Church, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.
