Obituary

Velma Mobley Connor, 89, of Americus, formerly of Tifton, passed away Friday, August 26, 2005, at Magnolia Manor in Americus. Her funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2005, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Dr. W. Ches Smith, III and the Rev. Dr. Wayne Roe officiating. Mrs. Connor was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Kenny Brownlee, Bobby Conway, Brother Fleming, Paul Johnson, Davy Barlow and Jim Mobley served as pallbearers.

Born February 12, 1916, in Tift County, Mrs. Connor was the daughter of the late Edwin Leo Mobley and Mary Edna Conger Mobley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Claude M. Connor; and two brothers, Ozwell Eston Mobley and E. L. Mobley.

Early in life, Mrs. Connor worked at the Tift County Health Department; and she was instrumental in helping to establish the first Tifton Library. Later, she worked for ten years for the Tift County School System; and she retired as the school secretary at Annie Belle Clark Elementary School. She will always be remembered as an unselfish caretaker to many for her passion for reading and her wonderful sense of humor.

Having lived most of her life in Tift and Berrien Counties, Mrs. Connor was an active member of Tifton's First Baptist Church; and she was a loving mother, not only to her children but to all children. The door on 20th Street was always open.

Mrs. Connor is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mike E. and Janice Connor of Baxley and Jerry M. Connor of Tifton; one daughter, Marianna Connor of Gainesville; two grandchildren and their spouses, April Tillman of Albany and Davey and Trina Barlow of Baxley; and four great-grandchildren.
