Mary Carolyn (Cornell) Swan, of Woburn, formerly a long-time resident of Overland Park, KS, passed away at Winchester Hospital on Nov. 4th. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Rowley C. and Esther (Cooper) Cornell. Mary was raised and educated in Sharpstown, MD and then moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a clerk for the F.B.I. It was there that she met her future husband, Jack R. Swan, a special agent for the FBI. They were married on July 24, 1948. Jack and Mary were transferred to Kansas City shortly thereafter. In Kansas City, Mary worked as a switchboard operator at the Carter-Waters Building & Construction Company for over 35 years. Most recently, she was employed with the Johnson County Library.
In her spare time, Mary enjoyed reading and socializing, and was an avid Red Sox and football fan. She was the beloved wife for 53 years of the late Jack Richard Swan, Sr. until his death in 2002, and the loving mother of Jack “Rick” Swan and his wife Patricia Barry of Winchester, MA. Mary was the dear sister of Nancy Lee Cornell of Waldorf, MD and the late Janet Rifenberg, and the devoted grandmother of Robert Travis Swan and his wife Claire Davies of Cambridge and the late Brooke Alexandra Swan. She is further survived by a great-grandson, Caellum Davies Swan. Mary leaves behind many good friends in the Kansas City and Boston areas. Visiting hours will be held in the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Sat. Nov. 8, from 1-3PM, with a Service at 2:45PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
