Obituary

Edward S. Murphy, M.D., age 88, a resident of Winchester for over 53 years, and of West Dennis and Vero Beach, FL, passed away on October 30, 2008 at the Arnold House in Stoneham. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Edward S. and Alice (Driscoll) Murphy. He was educated in the Brockton public school system, where he maintained a perfect attendance record from kindergarten through high school graduation. After graduation, he graduated from Harvard University and furthered his education at Tufts Medical School where he earned his M.D. Dr. Murphy then set up a private practice in Medford, where he practiced pediatrics for over 40 years. Dr. Murphy was the Chief of Pediatrics at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford for a number of years, as well as a clinical instructor at Tufts Medical School. In his spare time, Dr. Murphy enjoyed membership in the Medford Rotary Club of which was a past president, the Winchester Country Club, and the West Medford Reading Club. He also spent time traveling with his wife and children to many places, including Ireland, the South Pacific, and the South China Sea. An avid photographer, Dr. Murphy collected photos from his many trips. He was the beloved husband for 56 years of the late Muriel (MacDonald), and the loving father of Donal M. Grelotti and her husband Richard of Winchester and their children Caitlin and Matthew, Atty. Noreen A. Murphy of Arlington, Stephen E. Murphy and his wife Cammie Henderson of Belmont and their children, Grace and Katherine, and the late Paula A. Murphy. He was also the dear brother of the late Paul Murphy and brother-in-law of Robert MacDonald of Arlington and Ruth Hopkins of Vero Beach, FL. His Funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Monday, November 3 at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 3-6 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Home for Little Wanderers, 271 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02115 or to the Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, 3305 Washington St., Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.
