Adolph B. Monteiro, 87, of New Bedford died Wednesday October 15, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Gloria (Rose) Monteiro.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel R. and Constance (Baptista) Monteiro, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Monteiro was formerly employed by the Aerovox Corp. over 40 years until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal. He was a lifetime member of The United Social Club. He was an avid sports fan who loved to bowl and played baseball and basketball on many of the great Cape Verdean teams. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Monteiro of Williamstown, NJ and Russell Monteiro of New Bedford; three daughters, Patricia Cruz of Suffolk, VA, Carol Coleman and Karen Jenkins, both of New Bedford; a brother, Joseph Monteiro of Wareham; four sisters, Evelyn Almeida of Dartmouth, Mary Ames, Marion Barrows, and Betty Ann Fermino, all of New Bedford; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Alice Leighton, Pauline Cardoza, Arthur, Edward, George, and Robert Monteiro.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
