Vernon T. Carter, 50, of New Bedford died Wednesday April 9, 2003 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the companion of Grace Botelho of New Bedford, and son of Florentina (Tagle) Carter of Dartmouth and the late Earle M. Carter, Sr.
Mr. Carter was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Mr. Carter was currently employed by RGIS Inventory. He had previously been employed as an environmental police officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, at Morse Cutting Tools and Chamberlain Manufacturing in New Bedford. He had also been an lead paint inspector for the Concentrated Code Enforcement Program, under the direction of his late father.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was a former member of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, William H. Carney Lodge #200, and was a former member of the United Social Club.
Survivors include his mother; his companion; a son, Vernon T. Carter, Jr.; 4 daughters, Natasha Azevedo, Tiffany Azevedo, Sandra Carter and Jordyn Pina, all of New Bedford; 3 brothers, James T. Carter of Grenada Hills, CA, Ronelino Carter of New Bedford and Roberto Carter of Ludlow; 4 sisters, Melody Carter-Walls of Springfield, Dawne Botelho and Kimberly Carter, both of New Bedford, and Priscilla Hagins of Simpsonville, SC; an uncle, Rev. Vernon Carter of Cambridge; 3 grandchildren, Kyrell Kouta, Myrielle Azevedo and Messiah Morgan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.He was the brother of the late Ernesto T. Carter and Earle M. Carter, Jr.
His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday April 17, 2003 at 11 AM in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 522 County St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home on Wednesday April 16, 2003 from 4-7 PM.
