Rudolph M. Cataldo, “Rudy” age 85 of Somerville died Thursday at his home. He is the beloved husband of Barbara (Malcolm) Amero-Cataldo. Mr. Cataldo was born in Boston, son of the late Ernesto and the late Camilla (Carbone) Cataldo and attended local schools in East Boston. In early years he worked delivering meat. This was an introduction to the restaurant industry. At the age of 21 he opened a restaurant, the Coach Grill in Cambridge on 100 Tremont Street, now UNO’s. He operated the restaurant as the manager and maitre`d. A personable and gentle man, it soon became a favorite among the Harvard Square crowd. During this time he joined with his brothers in another restaurant in Downtown Boston, coincidentally at 100 Tremont street also, named the Coach Grill and Chez Freddie Lounge. This was a popular restaurant and lounge, widely known and frequented by many of Boston’s infamous politicians. He and his wife kept the restaurant open for a full week feeding locals and many National Guard troops during the blizzard of 1978. He sold the restaurant in 1988. In his spare time Rudy loved taking trips to Las Vegas and really lived life to the fullest. Former member of the Winthrop Elks #1078.He is survived by four daughters, Tracy Amero-Cataldo of Somerville, Debra Juliano of Medford, Lynne Cataldo and, Elida Cataldo of Revere, 2 sons Rudy Cataldo Jr. of Andover, MA, Mark Cataldo of Marblehead, and the late Gary Amero-Cataldo. Loving grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 2 late grand children. Dear Brother of Freddo Cataldo of Winthrop and many late brothers and sisters. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Clement Church, 71 Warner Street, Medford, Friday Oct. 17 at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
