Gwendolyn J. Sanders, 82, of St. Simons Island, died Thursday, October 9, 2008, in Glynn County.
Graveside services will be held in Fitzgerald, Georgia at Evergreen Cemetery on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2 :00 P.M with the Rev. Tom Braziel officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 12 o’clock noon until the funeral hour.
Mrs. Sanders was born September 23, 1926 in Miami, Florida to the late Spencer Newton and Katherine Cobb Newton. She was a graduate of Wilcox County High School and attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. Mrs. Sanders was a retired secretary for General Telephone Company. She lived in Fitzgerald until 1998 where she was a former member of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Sanders was recently an active member of the First Baptist Church in St. Simons Island and a member of the Friendship Finders Class.
She is survived by her daughters: Linda (Raymond) Pinson of St. Simons, Deborah Charlene Reeves of Brunswick; son, David Alan (Yvonne) Sanders of Dublin; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Charles Sanders; brother Evander Joseph Jackson; and a sister, Geraldine Jackson Fitzgerald Owens.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to St. Simons First Baptist Church, 729 Ocean Boulevard, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
