LOWELL—Thomas J. ‘Doc’ Grady, 79 years old, a longtime resident of the Belvidere section of Lowell, died Wednesday evening, October 1st, at Saints Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Rose (Welenc) Grady with whom he celebrated 51 years of marriage in November of 2007.
He was born in Lowell, on March 9, 1929, a son of the late Thomas J. and Mary A. (King) Grady. He was a graduate of St. Michael’s Grammar school, Keith Academy, Class of 1945, and Providence College.
Mr. Grady served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed as a Teacher at Lowell High School for 40 years, and served as Athletic Trainer for over 30 years. He was the founding President of the United Teachers of Lowell; and a past Vice-President of the Massachusetts Federation of Teachers. He also worked as a basketball and baseball referee with Greater Lowell youth sports for many years.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law: Kevin T. and Suzanne Grady, of Franklin, MA; Brian A. and Lori Grady, of Salem, NH; a daughter and son-in-law: Roseann and Victor Zelny, of Lunenburg; six grandchildren: Ryan, Matthew, Brett, and Zachary Grady, and Victoria and Micayla Zelny; a sister: Mrs. John A. (Mary Ann) Crowe, of Lowell; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Robert and Frances Grady.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 PM Sunday, October 5th, at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). His Funeral Mass to be offered Monday morning, October 6th at 11 AM at the HOLY TRINITY POLISH CHURCH, High Street, Lowell. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury.
