Obituary

Auburn- Edith M. (Woll) Butler, 89, of 669 Washington Street, formerly of 129 Central Street, died Friday, April 4, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, after an illness.

Her husband, William O. Butler Sr., died in 1986. She leaves three sons, David W. Butler of Etna, California, H. Stephen Butler of Wilmington, VT, and William O. Butler Jr., of Spotsylvania, Virginia; a daughter, Merryl B. Chabot of South Attleboro; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Bradford L. Butler of Auburn, and a brother, Arthur Woll of Millbury, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Gustaf and Charlotte (Edmund) Woll and lived here 55 years. She graduated from Commerce High School.

Mrs. Butler was a music teacher for the City of Worcester Public Schools for many years. She was an antique dealer in Sturbridge and Auburn for 20 years.

She was a friend of the First Congregational Church of Auburn. She was a member and past matron of the Pakachoag Order of the Eastern Star #244, a past master and lecturer of the Auburn Grange #60, the Worcester Central Pomona, was past president of the Mary D. Stone School P.T.A., past president of the Golden Years Club, past president of the 224 O.E.S. She was a member of the Worcester Music Festival Chorus, and a charter member of the Worcester County Light Opera Club, and designed its costumes for many years. She was a Sunday School teacher at the First Congregational Church of Auburn and Oxford Methodist Church, and was a soloist at the former Salem Square Congregational Church.

Mrs. Butler was the resident pianist at the Lodge at Eddy Pond, playing daily for the past 2 1/2 years.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 35 School Street. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Quinsigamond Corps, 884 Millbury Street, Worcester, MA 01607. Dirsa-Morin Funeral Home, 298 Grafton Street (www.worcesterfuneral.com), Worcester, is directing arrangements.
