Obituary

Hazel Annabell (Day) Sylvester, age 92, passed away Sunday at Mystic Manor.

She was born September 29, 1916, in Montague, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Olin Frank and Alice Maude (Risley) Day and was the wife of the late William Ephrem Sylvester Sr.

She is survived by her five children: William E. Sylvester, Jr. and wife Nancy of Sebastian, FL; Olin E. Sylvester and wife Lynn of Rockmart, GA; Judith R. Fitzgerald and husband William of North Stonington, CT; Robert A. Sylvester and wife Janet of Ledyard, CT; and, Richard F. Sylvester Sr. and wife Susan of Simpsonville, SC; and former daughter-in-law Barbara Sylvester of Pawcatuck, CT; 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, Rena Tardy of Newport Maine, whom she called sister.

She worked for many years at the French Cleaners in Mystic, CT, which was owned and operated by her late husband Bill. She enjoyed camping with her husband, children, family and friends. She was a member of the Wally Byam Airstream Campers Travel Club. She was very active in various scouting programs for many years.

Hazel was a communicant of St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton, CT.


Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Wednesday from 6-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton on Thursday at 10am. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Because of the excellent care she received the family requests in lieu of flowers, that a donation in her memory be made to the Recreation Fund at Mystic Manor Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, 475 High Street, Mystic CT 06355
