Richard Falk Shane died September 27, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born October 16, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated summa cum laude and a member of the honor societies of Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma, from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. He later earned a MBA from San Diego State University. An avid swimmer on his high school swim team and life guard, he continued to enjoy swimming most of his life.
Richard was a WWII veteran of the US Army, where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He spent his entire career at General Dynamics, first at Convair in San Diego and later at Electric Boat, Groton. He retired in 1987 after 36 years of service.
He was predeceased by his wife of 27 years, Margaret “Peggy” (Ruediger). Together, they spent many joyous years traveling throughout North America. They particularly enjoyed the West.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter Rebecca, her husband Michael McRoberts, his grandchildren Heather and Matthew and a brother William Shane of Albuquerque, NM. He will also be greatly missed by his stepchildren Linda Stout, John Carton and his wife Kathy and Maureen and her husband Ken Brown, and step-grandchildren Haley Stout, Kristine, Sarah and John Carton.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Friday from 12noon-1:45, followed by a 2pm Graveside Service at Elm Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Doretta M. Colburn will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
