Obituary

Margaret Lucy McLendon McCartney, 83, formerly of Tifton and a long-time resident of Albany, died Monday, September 29, 2008 at Memorial Convalescent Center in Adel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2008, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Dr. W. Ches Smith, III will officiate with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 2, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Mrs. McCartney was born on June 30, 1925 in Berrien County and was the daughter of Marion Wesley McLendon and Millie Lucyann Hancock McLendon, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James Thomas McCartney, Jr.; four sisters, Georgia Martin-Vegue, Verna Alderman, Mary Kate Duke and Dora Alderman; and three brothers, Roger McLendon, Melvin McLendon and Jack McLendon.

During World War II, Mrs. McCartney worked with the War Rationing Board and, later, the Postal Service. She later worked with Georgia Power Company and was a bookkeeper for several years. She had also been active in real estate in the Albany area. Mrs. McCartney was a long-time member of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany and a member of the Eastern Star. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Mrs. McCartney is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Thomas McCartney, III and his wife, Irene Smith McCartney, of Conroe, Texas; four grandchildren, Margaret Ann "Maggie" McCartney, Katherine Irene McCartney, Thomas Lamar McCartney and James Wesley McCartney, all of Conroe, Texas; one brother-in-law, Nicholas Wright McCartney of Tifton; one sister-in-law, Miriam McCartney Cauthen of Tifton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
