Constance Alexander Welch passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at StoneRidge's Avalon Nursing Center in Mystic. She lived to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her first date with her husband of 57 years, Roy D. Welch, also of Mystic.
She was born Aug. 4, 1930, in Chicago, Ill. She was the daughter of Herbert A. Alexander and Mabel Dore Alexander.
She is predeceased by her daughter, Alyson Welch Geer and her brother, Herbert Alexander.
She is survived by her children, Jody Dore Welch of Katonah, N.Y., Scott Alexander Welch of Manhattan, N.Y.; Cynthia Welch Moriarty of Amherst, Mass. and Jocelyn Spencer Welch McCarthy of South Kingstown, R.I. Her six grandchildren are Christopher Welch Moriarty, Kimberly Anne Moriarty, Timothy Welch Moriarty, all of Amherst Mass., Alexander Welch Skillman of Katonah, N.Y. and Samuel Alexander McCarthy and Madeleine McCarthy of South Kingstown, R.I.
Constance Welch graduated from Northwestern University in 1951, where she was awarded a BA in Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude. She was a member of the Synchronized Swim Team and served as President of the University's Women's Athletic Association.
She had lived for the past 29 years in Mystic, where she was a member of the Mystic Congregational Church. She was a past President of the Church's Women's Fellowship. She sang with the Church choir for 18 years. She was also an active member of the Mystic Trillium Garden Club,
Connie was a leader in programs for World Hunger and Poverty Relief. A person of many talents, she was also an artist and a gardener, having won several first prizes in garden shows over the years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Mystic Congregational Church, a reception following in the Parish Hall.
