Frank A. Cain, 95, of Lawrence died Monday, September 22, 2008 at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. The son of the late Timothy and Julia (Connolly) Cain, Frank was born and educated in Lawrence and during World War II served as a combat medic with the United States Army's 1st Calvary Division. A Purple Heart recipient, he was present at the battle of Leyte when General McArthur returned to the Philippines. Mr. Cain also participated in the liberation of the Bataan prisoners and in the liberation of Manila. On September 8, 1945, he was among the first troops to enter Japan.
Following his military service, Mr. Cain was employed for many years as an Attendance Officer for the Lawrence Public Schools.
He held membership in the Queen City D.A.V. and was a commander of the Massachusetts D.A.V. He gave 50 years of service to the Allied Veterans Council of Lawrence, and after retirement, volunteered in the Lawrence Council on Aging. He was a lifetime parishioner of St. Patrick's Church.
Mr. Cain is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Anna Marie (O'Carroll) Cain and by his brother-in-law Daniel G. O'Carroll and his wife, Ruth. He is also survived by his nephews and their spouses: Richard D. Cain Jr. and Patricia of North Andover, Daniel J. Cain and Donna of Salem, NH., William D. O'Carroll and Kelly of Dover, N.H., and Daniel N. O'Carroll and Carla of Methuen. He also leaves several grandnieces and nephews and was predeceased by his brother Richard D. Cain.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. in St. Patrick's Church in Lawrence.
Burial will follow in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in North Andover.
